Merrow Schools Federation support

Merrow Schools Federation is a mainstream federated infant and junior school based in Guildford, Surrey. We are proud to be a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community, enriched by a wide range of cultures, multiple languages spoken, and a strong commitment to supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). In 2024, we found ourselves supporting a growing number of children with complex needs who were struggling to access learning due to sensory challenges. The typical classroom environment was overwhelming, often leading to sensory overload that affected children’s ability to concentrate, engage, and feel comfortable in their educational setting.

Recognising the need for a more tailored approach, we began creating sensory-friendly classrooms—spaces that are calm, clutter-free, and organised to reduce visual and auditory distractions. However, we knew that specialist support and equipment were vital to truly meet the needs of our learners. That’s when we reached out to the Children With Special Needs Foundation (CWSNF), whose incredible support enabled us to take meaningful steps toward inclusive education.

Thanks to CWSNF’s generous funding, we were able to provide every classroom with a sensory toolbox including wobble cushions, chair bands, fidget aids, and ear defenders. We also invested in Hoki stools, a dynamic seating option that helps children receive the sensory feedback they need while staying focused on their learning. Each classroom now also includes a calming zone equipped with weighted lap pads, breathing cards, and other tools to support self-regulation. These changes have made a profound difference—children with sensory needs are more engaged, better regulated, and happier, and all learners benefit from the inclusive environment.

Beyond the classrooms, CWSNF also helped us create dedicated Nurture Rooms in both our infant and junior school. These therapeutic spaces offer a safe, calming environment for children experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties. Whether a child needs a quiet space to recharge or a place to receive physiotherapy or occupational therapy, these rooms are equipped to support a range of needs. Thanks to the foundation’s support, we were able to furnish these spaces with resources such as bubble tubes, therapy mats, physio balls, calming rockers, trampolines, dark tents, infinity mirrors, and a variety of sensory tools.

We cannot thank the Children With Special Needs Foundation enough for their incredible support. Their partnership has empowered us to create a truly inclusive learning environment where all children, regardless of their needs, can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. Their belief in every child’s right to an inclusive education has made a lasting impact on our school and the lives of the children we serve.
